SeaMonster Monk | Eleni Mylonas
As a part of LIVE @ Art-Athina, CHEAPART presents Eleni Mylona's SeaMonster Monk, a live art project and audiovisual soliloquy on the deep grief that overtakes the artist when encountering the continued destruction threatening every life on the planet.
"I walk on the coast, right where the land is washed by the sea. The meeting of those two elements has been giving me multiple insights. It?s summertime and the beach “has been cleaned.” I walk on sand infested with bottle caps, straws, fishing lines and an array of tiny indistinguishable plastic detritus. I look away. Everything looks normal and people are swimming nearby unconcerned.
How can I process this problem that is choking us? The sea washes out big objects and piles them up behind the rocks on the shore. I encounter huge knots of discarded nets, seaweed, and colorful ropes and I struggle to liberate them. But the small pieces remain. Fragments of plastic float perpetually poisoning every life that feeds in the ocean.
We blindly follow acquired desires for an easy and profitable life lacking any knowledge or respect for the essence, for the magical balance that is our very matrix. We refuse to go to the source of the evil. I am making a plea to the higher forces."
